Introduction

What is it


The Plassy which features on the opening credits of the well-known sitcom, Father Ted, lies shipwrecked on the eastern shore of Inisheer at Gob an Cora close to TrĂ¡ Caroach. Inisheer is the smallest of the Aran Islands archipelago which lie in Galway Bay or Loch Lurgan off the west coast of Ireland.

Why is it there


She ran aground on the Finnis rock, currenty marked by a buoy about 1km east of her current location during heavy seas while shipping cargo from Fenit, County Kerry to Galway City on March 7th 1960.

When was it built


The Plassy was originally launched in 1940 as HMS Juliet with a pennant number of T136 as an Anti-Submarine Escort and Mine Sweeper. She was subsequently converted to a cargo ship and named Peterjon before finally ending up with the Limerick Steamship Company and remnamed Plassy.
