Origins

The ship was ordered by the British Royal Navy on 12 December 1939.

She was built as a Shakespearian class trawler which is a subclass of the much larger Isles class.

She was built by Cook, Welton & Gemmel, Shipbuilders of Hull and Beverley, 1883 - 1963 with a steam engine supplied by Charles D Holmes & Co.
